Young doctors choose specializations in which it is known that they can earn good, decent money, for example ophthalmology, dermatology, aesthetic surgery – said prof. Cezary Szczylik, head of the clinical oncology and chemotherapy department at the European Health Center Otwock. As he added, “in the Masovian Voivodeship, last year, there were several dozen candidates for one residency position for the specializations mentioned, but there was not a single candidate for oncology.”

Two Poles, two oncologists and two countries that lack them, but that's where the similarities end. Paulina Tomanek spent one day working with an oncological surgeon in Poland and with his colleague working in a German hospital to see from the inside and show that, despite the same problem, Poland and Germany are divided by a gap in terms of the comfort of doctors' work and the safety of patients. Report “Oncology. Two worlds” in “Black and white” is now available on TVN24 GO.

Szczylik: young doctors choose ophthalmology, dermatology or aesthetic surgery

The guest of “You get up and the weekend” on TVN24 was prof. Cezary Szczylik, head of the clinical oncology and chemotherapy department at the European Health Center Otwock. – Poland is a country where expenditure on science, expenditure on research in medical sciences and biological sciences are incomparable to what is offered and what is happening in the world – he said.

He noted that each new oncology drug is the result of many years of research and huge expenditure. – Bringing a new oncology drug to the market many years ago cost several billion dollars. We do not have such resources in this country, he noted.

When asked what to do to improve the condition of oncology in Poland, he replied that first of all he would focus on “making specialization in oncology attractive.”

– To educate young oncologists, to encourage them during their studies to take up this difficult discipline, because observing what is happening on the medical market today, money wins. Young doctors choose specializations in which it is known that they can earn good, decent money, for example ophthalmology, dermatology, aesthetic surgery – said the oncologist.

He pointed out that “in the Masovian Voivodeship last year, there were several dozen candidates for one residency position in the specializations mentioned, but there was not a single candidate for oncology.”

Szczylik: In many centers, oncologists see about 50 to 70 patients a day

As he said, “there is incredible pressure for the director of an oncology center to also have positive financial results, which translates into the fact that we have little time for the patient, because the National Health Fund's rates in oncology are very low.” – In fact, the rate for one patient is deficit, therefore the director of the hospital – I justify it – he is held accountable for whether, as the director of a facility that must have a positive financial result, he forces us to admit – I am talking about oncologists – enough patients for this result to be positive. This cannot be fixed because it happens at the patient's expense – he added.

– I dare say that if, in the provisions of the act, we wrote down from the point of view of the patient's good that the oncologist should devote 20 minutes to the patient, it would destroy the system – he said. He added that “we don't talk about critically difficult things, like the average age of an oncologist.” – The average age of a surgeon in Poland is 62 years. Poor financial prospects. These are not specializations that are attractive to doctors – noted prof. Szczylik.

– In many centers, oncologists see about 50 to 70 patients a day. This is the dehumanization of the profession, he said.
