We are already used to the fact that Iga Świątek is like a steamroller when she takes part in Roland Garros. She feels like a fish out of water on the Parisian clay courts and her rivals have been painfully aware of this for several years. This season she also started the roller during the Australian Open, in which she recently performed worse. On Wednesday, she defeated Emma Navarro 6-1, 6-2 and advanced to the semifinals, equaling her best result in Melbourne. On the occasion of this meeting, three interesting statistics were presented, thanks to which the Pole was once again among the great figures of tennis.

Great regularity of Christmas. A Polish woman is making history again

Świątek has five Grand Slam titles, but so far she has not been able to get past the semi-finals in Australia. She had only reached it once before (2022). And although it may seem that her results were below expectations in Wimbledon (she was in the quarterfinals once), the statistics presented during her match with Navarro by the broadcasters show how consistent she has been since the beginning of her professional career. Well, since 2019, when she started professional competition and made her debut in the senior Grand Slam competition, she has already won 88 matches. During this time, only one person can boast a better result. Novak Djokovic, who has won a record 24 titles of this rank, has accumulated 124 such victories over the last five years.

A permanent source of tennis statistics is the Opta Ace profile on the X website (formerly Twitter). After the Pole's certain victory against Navarro, ranked eighth in the world, more interesting facts about the 23-year-old appeared. And those are the ones that make an impression. Świątek has just played her 12th match against a Top 10 Grand Slam opponent, and her balance is 9-3. Only Martina Navratilova has been better in the last 40 years, having won one more match.

So far, the Pole is eliminating subsequent rivals in this year's edition of the Australian Open at an impressive pace. Just look at her match results.

Iga Świątek's results so far in the Australian Open 2025

  • 1st round – Katerina Siniakova (50th WTA) 6:3, 6:4
  • 2nd round – Rebecca Sramkova (49th) 6:0, 6:2
  • 3rd round – Emma Raducanu (61st) 6:1, 6:0
  • 1/8 finals – Eva Lys (128th) 6:0, 6:1
  • quarterfinal – Emma Navarro (8th) 6:1, 6:2

In a post-match interview on Wednesday, Świątek herself admitted that the fight with Navarro was fiercer and more difficult for her than the result suggested. But this does not change the fact that she lost only three games, and on the way to the semi-finals only 14 in total. Opta Ace data shows that since the event in Melbourne introduced the field of 128 players – that is, since 1988 – only three tennis players advanced to the four with smaller losses. They were: Maria Sharapova (nine games in 2013), Monica Seles (12 games in 1991) and Steffi Graf (13 games in 1989). The Pole repeated the feat of Martina Hingis from 23 years ago. “Świąteking” – commented the authors of these statistics.

In the post-match interview, Świątek announced that she was hungry for more. She will face American Madison Keys in Thursday's semifinal. We just have to wait to see if the Pole will once again increase her achievements and become one of the legends again.
