Fedor Shandor took part in the fighting in Ukraine and lectured his students from the trenches with weapons in his hand. Now Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed him the new ambassador in Budapest.

President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky On Saturday, he appointed Fedor Szandor, a lecturer at the University of Uzhhorod and a representative of the Hungarian minority, as the new ambassador in Budapest. Szandor became famous for giving lectures from the trenches during the fights with the Russians.

The nomination of Szandor, who speaks Hungarian and is familiar with the situation of the approximately 100,000-strong Hungarian minority in Ukrainian Transcarpathia, has been talked about for a long time, but there has been no official decision yet. For two years, the Ukrainian mission in Budapest was headed by charge d'affairs Istvan Balog.

He lectured from the trenches

Professor Fedor Sandor took part in the fighting in Ukraine in a unit that included Transcarpathians Hungarians. In May last year, a photo of him was published, showing him lecturing his students from the trenches with a gun in his hand.

At the beginning of August 2023, his candidacy for the Ukrainian ambassador in Budapest was accepted by the then president Katalin Novak after several months of delay. Earlier, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs also gave the green light Peter Szijjarto.

It is not yet known when Szandor will arrive in Hungary to present his credentials to President Tamas Sulyok.
