The police recently detained two men in Żuromin who were found in possession of painkiller patches from which fentanyl could be obtained. However, there is still a man at large, whom in Żuromin they call “Ghost”. The mother of one of the dealers' victims says that “Duch” behaves as if he was untouchable, even though he is considered in the city to be the organizer of the fentanyl trade. Why do local residents seem to know more than the police? This is to be checked by the Police Internal Affairs Bureau.

They felt like kings of life in Żuromin, even though they could have contributed to even several dozen deaths. Until they were arrested, they thought they had impunity.

– The police stopped a car in the center of Żuromin, driven by two men, aged 34 and 35. In this car, the police seized several dozen painkiller patches from which fentanyl can be obtained, said the deputy inspector. Katarzyna Kucharska, press secretary of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Radom.

Fentanyl is an opioid painkiller and anesthetic. Over 100 times stronger than morphine. – The amount of seized drugs was so significant that it could have intoxicated about 800 people – said Bartosz Maliszewski, spokesman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Płock.

The elusive “Ghost”

However, it is far from success. Mrs. Barbara, a resident of Żuromin, emphasizes that “they didn't catch the most important ones.” There is still a man at large, whom people in Żuromin call “Ghost”. In a conversation with a reporter from “Uwaga” TVN, the man denied that he had “administered fentanyl” to anyone.

The mother of one of the dealers' victims says that “Duch” behaves as if he was untouchable, even though he is considered in the city to be the organizer of the fentanyl trade. Several dozen people came to his apartment while taking photos for TVN's “Uwagi” reportage.

– He walks freely with his dog, he is happy, I don't know why, but I see him every day. It's about – says Jadwiga Karpińska, mother of the deceased Paweł. She claims that “Duch” is selling fentanyl – lately in the city rather than in her apartment, because, in her opinion, she is afraid of the police.

Residents fear that another overdose death is only a matter of time. Toxicologist Dr. Eryk Matuszkiewicz emphasizes that it is easy to confuse the dose between one that will cause intoxication and one that will lead to cardiac arrest and death.

Thirty deaths to be investigated and an internal police investigation

Fentanyl is available only by prescription, which is not easy to obtain. – In the system, I am obliged to check whether the patient also took this drug, whether he had prescriptions issued, whether he filled them, and if so, in what quantity – emphasizes Anna Łotowska-Ćwiklewska, a specialist in anesthesiology and intensive care.

Hence the question: where did “Duch” and his gang get this medicine? – Counterfeiting prescriptions is an option, and obtaining this drug in countries where fentanyl control is weaker is also possible – says criminologist Dr. Paweł Moczydłowski.

Fentanyl has been sold by dealers in Żuromin for years. Maybe even twelve years, because that's how far investigators want to go when looking at overdose deaths and closed cases. Thirty cases. Thirty deaths to be solved. Plus three from the last few weeks.

The Police Internal Affairs Bureau is also to investigate why the residents of Żuromin seem to know more about this case than local police officers.
