The number of pedestrians killed at crossings has decreased this year by more than 40 percent, compared to the same period in 2019. The brd24.pl portal checked how the new regulations on priority at zebra crossings influenced the accident statistics. The improvement is also visible in terms of the injured as a result of the deduction – we are talking about a 30% decrease.

At the beginning of June, new regulations came into force, increasing the protection of pedestrians at crossings across roads and bicycle paths. From now on, they have priority over vehicles not only when they are already on the lanes, but also when entering them. The new rules do not only apply to track crossings. Here the tram still has priority.

The brd24.pl portal analyzed the statistics of the Police Headquarters on accidents at pedestrian crossings. The data concerned accidents caused by drivers who did not give way to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings. The number of accidents, fatalities and casualties in the period from January to October was compared in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

In 2019, there was a 2077 deductions at crossings due to drivers’ fault. A year later, i.e. at a time when the traffic volume decreased due to the pandemic – to 1791. The data available so far for 2021 speak of 1439 accidents. It means there was 20 percent less such accidents than in the corresponding period of 2020 and over 30 percent less than two years ago.

Between January and October 2019, it died 139 pedestrians who did not yield to the lanes, another year is 130 fatalities, and the current year – 81. This means a decrease in the number of pedestrians killed by 42 percent compared to two years back and by 38 percent for 2020.

There is also a clear difference in the case of data on injured people. As a result of a deduction at the transition due to the driver’s fault in 2019, they were injured 2042 persons. The number of victims fell in 2020 to 1737 people. However, this year they were injured 1415 people. This a drop of 30 percent compared to 2019 i by 19 percent compared to 2020

Overall accident statistics are less optimistic

To confirm that the decrease in the number of accidents at crossings is related to the change in regulations, the brd24.pl portal also checked general statistics on the number of accidents in the same periods. When we look at the numbers for all accidents, without breaking them down into causes, things are not so good, although there are declines.

The number of accidents in Poland in the period from January to October 2021 decreased by only five percent compared to 2020, but by as much as 25 percent compared to 2019. The data are: 19 161 accidents in 2021, 20 171 in 2020. and 25,298 in 2019.

Data on fatalities show that the number of fatalities in 2021 decreased by 13 percent compared to 2019 and by eight percent compared to 2020.

There is a slight – because only 2% – difference in the number of people injured in the period from January to October 2021 and 2020. This year there were fewer injured. A greater decrease is visible compared to 2019 – then we are already talking about the fact that there were 25 percent fewer people with injuries.
