On Friday in Moscow, the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in World War II took place. In addition to the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, the celebrations at Czerwony Square were attended by, among others, Chinese leader XI Jinping, Serbia President Aleksandar Vučić and the Prime Minister Slovakia Robert Fico. The latter was the only leader of the EU member state who took part in the Moscow celebrations, says the Reuters agency.

Protests in Slovakia

Ficy's visit to Moscow met with great criticism in his homeland. On Thursday about 9,000 people demonstrated against her in Bratislava. The demonstration was organized by the strongest opposition party Progressive Slovakia (Progresivni Slovensko, PS). Speakers from other opposition political parties also appeared on the podium.

– Quite Fico. We have enough. We will not be silent – chanted the crowd in Bratislava as the prime minister on board a special aircraft flew to Moscow. The words “collaborator” and “Russian agent” also fell from the crowd. A portrait of Ficy with the inscription “Traitor” also appeared on the banners.

In a similar tone, the speeches of speakers were maintained, who emphasized that the prime minister's policy may end with insulation of Slovakia. PS leader Michal Šimečka also stated that the visible alliance of the opposition, which connects conservatives and liberals, can mean the end of Ficy's rule. After the speech, Šimečki shouted “there is strength in unity”.

The opposition organized similar assemblies in other cities of Slovakia.

“Disgrace and betrayal”

Criticism of Ficy's visit to Moscow was also continued on Friday. Representatives of the Progressive Slovakia party said that this visit “is a disgrace and betrayal of the interests of Slovaks.” And Michal Šimečka said that the protests that swept through Slovakia on Thursday are “proof that the prime minister does not represent Slovakia in Moscow.”

– We must develop a clear political alternative that will overcome this government coalition and restore Slovakia where its place, i.e. to Europe – said Šimečka.

On Thursday before traveling to Moscow, Prime Minister Fico participated in the central celebration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Pieszczany. He said that in 2015, when he was also the prime minister, he paid tribute to the victims of World War II at the tomb of an unknown soldier in Moscow. “If they don't stop me from getting there tomorrow, I will do it in 2025,” he said, establishing a government aircraft to flight through the territory of the Baltic States. When Fico in the caresses went out on the podium, some of the present booed him.
