During the assault on Wuhledar in the Donetsk region, the Russian army may have lost the entire elite 155th marine brigade, Politico writes, citing sources in the Ukrainian army. Fighting is taking place over the city, dubbed a “key bulwark” of Ukrainian defense in the Donbas.

Politico refers, among others, to the statements of Oleksiy Dmytrashkivsky, spokesman for the Ukrainian defense forces in the Tavrian direction. He said that many Russian soldiers were killed near Wuhledar and Marijinka in the Donetsk region, and the command headquarters was also destroyed. Over the past week – as Dmytrashkivsky stated – the Russians also lost about 130 units of equipment in this section, including 36 tanks.

The military reported that the elite 155th brigade of marines was defeated near Wuhledar. According to him, the daily losses of this formation during the assaults ranged from 150 to 300 soldiers. The brigade had about five thousand soldiers who were killed, wounded or taken prisoner.

– The 155th brigade had to replenish its ranks three times already. For the first time after the occupation of Irpień and Bucza. The second time they suffered a defeat near Donetsk, and now almost the entire formation has been destroyed at Wuhledar, said Dmytrashkivsky.

Despair of pro-Kremlin bloggers

Politico also cites an assessment by the U.S. Institute for War Studies, which said that the defeats of Russian forces in the Battle of Wuhledar “probably have further weakened ultranationalist circles’ belief in the ability to conduct a decisive offensive operation.”

Pro-Kremlin military bloggers mourn the huge losses and criticize the Russian command for sending elite troops for frontal strikes. He quotes the former leader of the Donetsk separatists, Igor Girkin (using the pseudonym Strelkov), who called the Russian generals “morons who do not learn from their mistakes.”

On his blog on the Telegram channel, Girkin confirmed that Russian troops near Wuhledar were withdrawing without the necessary air cover. He wrote that the Russian losses turned out to be “one-sided” and “Ukrainians shot at the retreating Russians as if at a shooting range.” He estimated that the defeat at Whledar meant the end of the Russian army’s offensive on the entire Donetsk front.

Shoigu reports “successful offensive”

The defeat of Russian troops in the battles for the city, called the “key bulwark” of Ukrainian defense in Donbasscame just days after the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported a “successful offensive at Wuhledar”. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry, in turn, published a video showing the destroyed Russian military column in this place, reminded the Politico portal.

However, Ukrainians are in no hurry to celebrate victory as Russian forces continue to storm Ukrainian positions near Wuhledar, Avdiivka and Bakhmut, where Ukrainians are preparing for street fighting. – I would like the weapons from our partners to come faster. This would give us the opportunity not only to defend and stop the attacks, but also to finally push the Russians out of our territory, he quotes Dmytrashkivsky’s appeal at the end of his publication.
