Avdiivka, attacked by Russian troops, is almost wiped out, said Vitaly Barabash, mayor of this city in the Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, on Friday. He added that the damage in Avdiivka is already greater than that in Bakhmut.
– Unfortunately, Avdiyivka is already getting closer to Marjinka in appearance. I would like to remind you that Marjinka is a town where basically nothing exists anymore. It is destroyed down to its foundations. There is not a single surviving building there, said Vitaly Barabash during a Friday program broadcast jointly by all Ukrainian television stations. – Avdiivka is getting closer to this – he added.
Barabash reported that Russian forces are attacking the city with artillery every day, conducting dozens of massive shellings. Air attacks are also carried out.
Thirty raids a day
The mayor of Avdiivka, located near occupied Donetsk, also announced that the enemy army was bombing the city every day. – There are eight, ten, twenty, and sometimes thirty air raids a day, said Barabash, quoted by the Ukrainian section of Radio Svoboda. – If we are talking about attacks on the positions of Ukrainian forces, there are hundreds of them. Right now, the enemy is sending really large forces to capture Avdiivka, he added.
On Thursday, the commander of the Tauryda group (Ukrainian troops in the Zaporizhia Oblast and part of the Donetsk Oblast), Oleksandr Tarnavsky, announced the start of the third wave of assaults in the Avdiiv direction. “There were 56 combat clashes in this section,” the general said.
Earlier, the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), citing geolocation data, reported that on November 19, the Defense Forces Ukraine they launched a counterattack and moved forward in the Avdiivka area.
American analysts also reported that the aggressor’s forces broke through the defense of Ukrainian forces in the city’s industrial zone, where the Ukrainian army was strengthening its fortifications.
In recent weeks, the Ukrainian authorities and media have emphasized that the current Russian attack on Avdiivka is the largest not only since the beginning of the current invasion, but also since 2014, when fighting broke out between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists in Donbass.
Avdiivka has been a bone in the Russians’ throat since 2014, because from this place the Ukrainians can maintain fire control over occupied Donetsk. – The enemy wants to capture Avdiivka because he believes that this city can be our bridgehead for an offensive on Donetsk – said Ukrainian military expert Oleksiy Hetman earlier.
