Fire in a historic church in Nowy Sącz. The suspect was arrested


A 22-year-old from Nowy Sącz is suspected of causing a fire in the historic church of St. Helena. The temple's presbytery was destroyed. Losses exceed one million zlotys.

Information about the suspect's arrest was provided on Monday by the spokeswoman of the Nowy Sącz police, Komm. Justyna Basiaga. According to her, the 22-year-old was charged with causing a fire to destroy a historic building and by court decision he was arrested for three months.

Losses estimated after fire of a 17th-century church, which took place on the morning of June 16, initially exceed one million zlotys. The wooden structure of the building and its furnishings were destroyed, including the historic altar, sculptures and paintings entered in the register of monuments.

– After the fire was extinguished, the Nowy Sącz police officers under the supervision of the prosecutor with the participation of, among others, a conservator of monuments and a firefighting expert, inspected the scene of the incident and undertook investigative activities, including: on identifying and interviewing witnesses, as well as securing CCTV footage. An investigation has been initiated into the case. The criminal investigators identified the person who could have caused the fire, reported Chief Basiaga.

A 22-year-old resident of Nowy Sącz was arrested on June 21. He was charged with causing a fire in a historic church, causing damage exceeding a million zlotys. This crime is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
