A fire broke out in Cyprus, forcing residents of five towns to evacuate. At least three houses were destroyed and several others damaged, local media reported.

The fire broke out on Tuesday near the town of Polemina, which is located in the municipality of Paphos on the southwestern coast of Cyprus. The fire burned eight square kilometers of land, including houses and animal farms. The authorities ordered the evacuation of five towns: Polemi, Psathi, Lemona, Choulou and Kourtouka.

Houses burned down

As a result of the fire, at least three houses were destroyed and several others were damaged. According to local authorities, the element also destroyed agricultural crops. Parts of the Cypriot community were left without electricity because electricity pylons burned down.

– Firefighters are fighting continuous and intense fire outbreaks that occur between the towns of Polemi and Kourdaka, said Andreas Kettis, spokesman for the Cyprus Fire Department, on Wednesday afternoon. He added that several dozen firefighters were fighting the fire on site. A total of six planes took part in the extinguishing operation, some of them provided by Greece and Jordan

According to Greek media, water drops from planes began at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The pilots were ready for action at 5:30 a.m., but fog did not allow the machines to take off.

“Everything was covered with black soot”

“Everything has been covered with black soot, and it used to be green,” Psathi resident Michalis Kyriakou told state broadcaster CyBC. – The fire blew through our town like a hurricane, nothing was left – he added.
