Up to two thousand square meters were engulfed in flames at a landfill in Koniecpol, in the Silesian Voivodeship. Among other things, a hall with waste used to produce alternative fuels was on fire. The situation was brought under control in the morning. The extinguishing is ongoing, with 32 fire brigades working on site.
The fire that broke out on Wednesday evening on the premises of a company in Koniecpol (Silesia) covered an area of two thousand square meters, including a hall with waste used for the production of alternative fuels. There is no information about people injured.
The fire was visible from a dozen or so kilometers away. Five years ago, a similar incident occurred. In the same place, 45 fire brigades extinguished biomass, which consisted of plastic and cardboard.
WSKR reported that the situation was brought under control at around 4 a.m. The fire was still being extinguished after 6 a.m. 32 fire brigades are still working on the scene.
The spokeswoman for the provincial headquarters of the State Fire Service in Katowice, Brigadier Aneta Gołębiowska, informed that the services received a report of a fire in a hall at Szkolna Street in Koniecpol at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Fire in wooden and plastic elements
The State Fire Service reported on social media that a hall was on fire, where wooden elements and plastics were probably stored.
“Over 30 fire brigade vehicles are involved in the operation, mainly from the Częstochowa district. The deputy provincial commander of the State Fire Service, Senior Brigadier Roman Klecha, is present at the scene, along with the Operational Group,” the State Fire Service said in a statement. Water and foam tankers were also used to extinguish the fire.
As added, “during the activities carried out, the atmosphere was also measured for the presence of hazardous substances”. No threat to residents of nearby houses was detected.
