Hundreds of firefighters are fighting 70 forest fires in various parts of Greece, including the islands of Andros and Salamis. Strong wind makes fighting the fire difficult. On Friday, fireworks fired from a yacht caused a fire on Hydra Island.

Greece is fighting 70 fires that have broken out both on the Peloponnese peninsula and on some islands. More than 30 firefighters supported by two planes and five firefighting helicopters are fighting the fire burning in Andros in the Aegean Sea. Due to the threat, residents of four towns on the island were evacuated. The fire has not yet reached the local tourist resorts. On Saturday, firefighters managed to extinguish a forest fire on Salamis in the Saronic Gulf west of Athens. Fighting the fire is made difficult by strong winds and high air temperatures.

On Friday, fireworks fired from a yacht caused a fire on Hydra Island, the BBC reported, citing the local fire brigade. The fire destroyed a pine forest located on this tourist island.

– We are outraged that some people behave so irresponsibly and shoot fireworks into the pine forest – said the mayor of Hydra, Giorgos Koukoudakis, in an interview with the Greek station ERT. He added that the city authorities are waiting for the results of the preliminary investigation and then plan to take legal action against the people on the yacht.

According to the mayor, the fire has already been brought under control. Firefighting helicopters took part in extinguishing the fire.

Superhuman efforts

According to the eKathimerini portal, a 55-year-old volunteer firefighter was injured on Friday while extinguishing a fire in the Elida region in the Peloponnese. The man was taken to hospital, but he could not be saved.

About 120 firefighters, supported by dozens of firefighting vehicles, were deployed to the neighboring Achaean region to contain the forest fires. Residents of several villages were asked to leave their homes, and some supported the firefighting effort by pouring water from small buckets on the flames.

– All services are making superhuman efforts to tame the element – explained Vathrakogiannis, adding that the work of firefighters is hampered by dry, gusty winds blowing at a speed of up to 95 kilometers per hour.

Civil Protection Forces remain on alert as the risk of fires remains high on Saturday.
