The deadly fire in Greece continues. The element killed at least 20 people in the north-eastern region of Evros, destroyed houses and burned lush forests. This year, the country was hit by the most serious fires in the European Union since 2000.

For over two weeks, Greek firefighters have been fighting a fire that broke out in the Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli Forest National Park region. On Sunday, attempts to extinguish the fire were carried out on several fronts. The firefighters’ priority was to keep the flames away from naturally valuable forest areas – so far the fire has already consumed 30 percent of the area.

“We have nothing left”

The fires raging in Evros contributed to the death of at least 20 people. In August, 18 bodies were found in the forest near the village of Dadia – as it turned out, the victims were illegal migrants who did not know about the approaching disaster. On Friday, police officers managed to save a group of 25 people trapped by the flames.

The fire destroyed many houses and farmsteads. As an animal breeder from Provatonas told the Reuters news agency, his farm went up in flames on Saturday. Although the owner tried to save the flock, not all the animals survived.

– We have nothing left. Thirty-five of them burned, the rest suffered burns and we don’t know if they will survive. We don’t know what to do, he said.

According to data from the European Forest Fire System (EFFIS), from the beginning of the year to September 2, fire burned over 172,000 hectares in Greece. These are the largest losses of all Mediterranean countries – as reported last week by the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service, tragic fire season has not been recorded in any Member State since data recording began in 2000.
