The fire is being extinguished in Andalusia, the Spanish civil defense said. The element devastated areas in the six municipalities of the province of Malaga.

Spanish firefighters took control of a large forest and wasteland fire on Tuesday morning, which had been consuming areas in the Sierra Bermeja massif in Andalusia in the south of the country for almost a week. Due to the high speed with which the fire was moving, more than three thousand people had to be evacuated, mainly residents of the municipalities of Estepona, Jubrique and Genalguacil. The managers of the firefighting operation announced on Tuesday that the extinguishing of the fire would be accompanied in the coming hours by directing the evacuated people to their homes. They added that estimation of the area consumed by the fire had already begun. According to a preliminary assessment, it covered from 7,800 to 9,000 hectares. In a statement on Tuesday, Andalusia’s Prime Minister Juan Manuel Moreno announced that the fire was still present in some parts of the Malaga province, but pointed out that the arrival of rainfall was key to taking control of the element. According to information from the government of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, the fire was the result of a deliberate fire on Wednesday evening in a forest in the Sierra Bermeja massif.
