Flash flood in Zamość. Flooded streets, properties, garages

After the downpour in Zamość, streets, basements, garages, kindergartens, a school and a dormitory were flooded. The roads in the city are now passable. The city's mayor, Rafał Zwolak, announced that a crisis team had been convened and announced that the assessment of losses would begin on Thursday.

Since 5 p.m., Lublin firefighters have received nearly 200 reports related to the storms. About 140 incidents Zamosc and Zamość County. This mainly involves pumping water from flooded properties, streets, basements, and underground garages.

The mayor of Zamość, Rafał Zwolak, confirmed that among the flooded buildings were an agricultural school and a municipal dormitory on Szczebrzeska Street. – The water in the school was half a meter deep – he described.

He reported that the city was flooded within an hour, similar to the situation at the end of June. Due to the situation, a crisis team was assembled, which travels and responds to floods. “Firefighters are currently pumping water from flooded buildings and streets. The entire city is now passable. Tomorrow, there will be an estimate of the damage after the downpour,” the president informed on Wednesday evening. “I also have a flooded basement in a single-family house, the water is up to my ankles,” he added.

According to information from firefighters, the buildings that suffered damage during the storm also include kindergartens, restaurants and a furniture factory. “Even new road investments are not able to cope with draining such a large amount of water,” the city president added.

The downpour also affected the Zamość Zoo, which published photos of the enclosures next to the pond on social media. “We were forced to move the animals whose housing was flooded. This mainly concerns the enclosures for black-and-white lemurs and the wintering grounds of birds. This has happened twice already,” added Grzegorz Garbuz, director of the Zamość Zoo, in an interview with PAP.

As reported by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the cumulative rainfall in Zamość amounted to 134 liters per square meter. Rainfall is still occurring.

Wednesday is another day of violent phenomena in many places in Poland. In part of the Lublin province, including the Zamość district and Zamość, as well as in the Podkarpackie province, highest level storm warnings issued by IMWM. It was also announced RCB alert.
