The flood in Poland has also hit the education system. Today, 431 schools were closed, some of which decided to operate online. According to our estimates, there are over two hundred destroyed schools where classes cannot be held – said Barbara Nowacka, Minister of Education, in “Fakty po Faktach”.

In Friday's edition of “Fakty po Faktach” by the Minister of Education Barbara Nowacka spoke about the situation of schools in areas affected by floods.

– As of today, the situation was such that 431 schools were closed, and not all of them were not conducting classes. Some decided to operate online. They were most often the institutions that became either an evacuation site or a crisis management center, or both at the same time. And there were quite a few such schools – she said.

– However, according to our estimates, there were over two hundred such destroyed facilities where children could not attend classes. Please also remember that often this information regarding, for example, the scale of destruction of a school will reach us in a few days, because today everyone has a different priority, and very rightly so, because the first one is ensuring safety, saving lives and health – she emphasized.

– We are currently starting to count the damage. For example, the Silesian province. Two days ago, there were twenty-something schools closed. Today, all facilities were operating. So even where there was some flooding, it is already safe enough for children to have any form of activities, for example, care and educational activities – she added.

“There are schools that are completely devastated”

The Minister of Education also noted that “there are schools that are completely devastated”. – This is both Lower Silesia and the Opole province. Here we have a signal about schools that will require total reconstruction. Only today does the construction supervision have a chance to approach these buildings. After all, there are buildings and entire towns that are still flooded with water. Unfortunately, it will take some time to make a responsible assessment of the damage – she noted.

Nowacka assured that “every child, regardless of whether their school building is currently ready for use, is flooded, or is partially destroyed, will soon have care provided.” – If not in this facility, then in another, nearby one – she added.
