Flood in Poland. Police on reports of looters

The southwest of the country is facing the dramatic effects of flooding. Where the water recedes, looters may appear. Police reported that they had received 12 such reports in the areas affected by the natural disaster, of which one was confirmed.

– In the flooded areas, the police received 12 reports from citizens, which were supposed to concern looters. Out of these 12 reports, we have one confirmed situation – informed on Tuesday the spokeswoman for the Police Commander-in-Chief, Inspector Katarzyna Nowak.

A confirmed incident occurred in KÅ‚odzko. As reported by the KGP spokeswoman, two people were detained there who tried to steal cigarettes and alcohol from a flooded petrol station. She added that due to the fact that the value of the losses was less than PLN 800, it was classified as a misdemeanour.

– Those detained were punished with fines – she said.

Police patrol flooded areas

– We respond to all situations and threats. There are police officers from the criminal division in the flooded areas, who are guarding all the property and belongings left after the evacuation – said Nowak. She added that the police officers from the criminal division are not uniformed, so as to act more anonymously.

The KGP spokeswoman reported that 8,706 police officers are operating in flood-affected areas. They have 16 boats, pontoons, searchlights, generators and six helicopters.

She noted that since the beginning of the operations, 3,826 people have been evacuated, and 80 people have been evacuated by police helicopters, including those suffering from a heart attack, suspected stroke and people on dialysis.

– By 6 a.m., 110 roads were impassable in the flooded areas, including 22 national roads and one motorway – Nowak said.

She also appealed to drivers to follow announcements regarding disruptions and detours.
