“We firmly deny the false information about flood-related deaths that has appeared in the media,” the police said on social media. They said that seven deaths had been confirmed so far, and that “the circumstances of their deaths may indicate that they were caused by drowning.”
The police reminded that “in a tragic situation involving the death of people, information provided publicly should be reliable and appropriately sensitive”. “It is worth remembering this in order not to create space for false speculations, especially in such a delicate matter as human life” – she added.
Police: seven people died
She reported that so far “seven deaths of people have been revealed whose circumstances may indicate that their cause was drowning.”
The police have clarified that these are deaths in Bielsko-Biała (a man's body in a stream bed), Nysa (a man's body in the water near one of the city streets), Nowy Świętów (a woman's body in a river), Kłodzko (a man's body in the water of a flooded single-family house), Lądek-Zdrój (a woman's body in an apartment destroyed by water and a man's body – a citizen of German – in a car) and in Stronie Śląskie (a man's body in the riverbed).
In all these cases, the investigation into involuntary manslaughter is conducted by the district prosecutor's offices.
The Chief Police Commander, Superintendent Marek Boroń, announced at Wednesday's meeting of the crisis team in Wrocław that “the number of deaths has not increased”. He reported that one person is still being sought.
