– When we are dealing with such a terrible, destructive element, the situation must be dynamic. As for Wrocław, we expect this peak on Thursday – said the mayor of Wrocław, Jacek Sutryk, on TVN24. The guest of “Kropka nad i” also spoke about the reservoir in Racibórz. – This is, one could say, its debut, in very difficult conditions. So far, it is working – he said.
In Tuesday's edition of “Kropka nad i”, the mayor of Wrocław, Jacek Sutryk, was asked when the greatest threat could occur when it comes to the flood situation in the city.
– IMGW forecasts speak of Thursday. Yesterday it was still Friday, today we heard at 7 a.m. at the council, also with the Prime Minister, that it could be Thursday. This also shows how dynamic the situation is – he said. – Besides, when we are dealing with such a terrible, destructive element, the situation must be dynamic – he added.
– As for Wrocław, we expect this peak on Thursday. IMGW forecasts indicate that the water level will be at an important pre-Wrocław indicator, in Trestno, of 640-650 cm. This means that the flows in the Odra at that time will be at a level of 2,200-2,300 cubic meters per second. This is of course much less than in 1997, which was so strong here, and not only here, but remembered – he stated.
As he added, “this is the situation on the Oder and it is the most important for us”. – However, the situation at the Wrocław water junction is completely different than it was 25 years ago. Therefore, the Wrocław water junction is now able to accept water of up to 3,100 cubic meters per second – Sutryk emphasized.
Sutryk about the reservoir in Racibórz
The Mayor of Wrocław was also asked about the issue of the reservoir in Racibórz.
– Indeed, for us, and considering the entire Odra catchment area, Racibórz is important. What is happening above Racibórz, in the Czech Ostrava, is also important, which is why we here in Wrocław analyze and take into account many variables, taking various actions – he said.
– The Racibórz reservoir has successfully started operating. This is, one might say, its debut, in very difficult conditions. For now, this debut is working. The discharges are, I would say, very stable, as they were assumed and forecasted by IMGW – he noted.

The Racibórz Dolny reservoir with a capacity of 185 million cubic meters began to be filled from Sunday morning to take over the excess water flowing in from the Oder. The construction of the dry reservoir in Racibórz was completed at the turn of May and June 2020. It covers an area of 26 square kilometers, the length of the reservoir dams is over 20 km. The cost of the investment co-financed by the European Union, the World Bank, the Council of Europe Development Bank and the state budget amounted to approx. PLN 2 billion. The Buków polder, located above, cooperates with the Racibórz reservoir, the flood capacity of which reaches 57 million cubic meters.
