The police reported that 23 incidents of looting were recorded in flood-affected areas. 19 people were detained. The services are constantly monitoring the situation in flood regions, the police announced on Sunday.
On Sunday morning, the police published a graphic on social media, which shows that in the flood-affected areas (as of September 28, 2024, 11:59 p.m.) 23 incidents related to looting were recorded. The police arrested 19 perpetrators of crimes. Four offenses were recorded, and 201 fake fundraisers and 44 fake social media accounts were exposed.
The police reminds that they are constantly monitoring the situation in flood regions. Crime branch officers patrol areas where the water has already subsided and check the security of property left during the evacuation. The police appeals to report any suspicious behavior to the nearest police unit, services cooperating with it, or by calling the emergency number 112.
The act of looting, i.e. theft of property left unattended and unattended as a result of military operations or a natural disaster, is currently not separately defined in the Penal Code. Looting as a separate crime was defined shortly after the war in the 1946 Decree on particularly dangerous crimes during the reconstruction of the state. At that time, anyone who “appropriates or takes for the purpose of appropriating other people's movable property deprived of proper protection in connection with war or as a result of another extraordinary event” could face up to 15 years in prison.
