Houses flooded to the roof, cars overturned, several hundred people trapped. Kosovo suffers from extensive flooding caused by heavy downpours. No one was injured, but the damage is enormous.
Rescue services from Kosovo rescued several hundred people stuck in flooded houses in two days. Since Thursday, the country has been battling widespread flooding as a result of heavy rainfall that flooded overflowing rivers. It was especially dangerous in the western and northern parts of the country.
Water flooded everything instantly
Drone footage shows flooded towns and buildings. In some cases, the water level reached the roofs.
– Water flooded the house within 20 minutes. The damage is evident in the kitchen, yard, garage, as well as other homes in the area. The entire first floor was flooded and all equipment was destroyed, said Gjin Gjinaj, a resident of Klina.
Frrok Ndrecaj blamed the effects of the floods on the local authorities, who ordered the modernization of the canals. “There used to be water flowing through the area, but now, after recent work by the municipality, our homes are flooded,” he said.
In Srbica, shop workers tried to remove the water by pushing it out with snow shovels. The streets are full of vehicles scattered by the fast flowing water.
– I’m not the only one who lost my car, many people have had the same. I got stuck and had to ask for help. Firemen rescued me with a bucket on a bulldozer. The damage in our commune is huge – said Ramadan Lutfiu.
20 years of neglect
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti expressed the opinion that although the damage is huge, it is comforting to know that no one died in the flood.
There is no improvement in the situation in the forecasts for the coming days. Authorities have warned that more rain is expected and flooding will continue.
