One person was killed and several injured in a collision near the town of Veauchette in the Loire department in central-eastern France. According to the authorities, the likely cause of the accident was icing on the road after freezing rain.
The accident, in which more than 20 vehicles, including several lorries, collided on Monday after 6 o’clock on the A72 motorway about half a kilometer before the toll booth in Veauchette towards Saint-Étienne/Clermont-Ferrand, local services informed.
Traffic was blocked in both directions for six hours. In the direction of Saint-Étienne/Clermont-Ferrand it was resumed at 13.30, in the other direction it was still prohibited.
One person died, several were injured
The fatality of the accident is a 71-year-old man. Eight people were injured, three of them seriously. The 19 people who were also involved in the accident were not injured.
12 ambulances arrived at the scene of the accident.
Icing could have caused a collision
Local media report that the circumstances of this incident are not clear, but most likely the collision occurred as a result of difficult weather conditions. The prefect of the Loire emphasized at a press conference that on Monday morning roads were very icy throughout the department.
Vinci Autoroutes, the manager of France’s highways, said the accident was caused by freezing rain.
