France. Earthquake in the west of the country


An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 hit western France on Friday, the German Geological Research Center (GFZ) said. There are no reports of casualties or damage.

The epicenter of the earthquake was probably in the commune of Niort, in the west of the country in the region of New Aquitaine, according to French media, with the reservation that this information has not yet been confirmed. The tremors occurred three kilometers north of the commune of Saint-Georges-du-Bois in the same region, according to the US government geological agency, the USGS.

German authorities previously reported that the quake had a magnitude of 5.5. It occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, the GFZ reported.

There is no information on casualties or damage so far.
