French President Emmanuel Macron met on Friday with Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the Élysée Palace reported on Saturday. As emphasized in the statement, Macron assured France of support for human rights defenders in Russia.

The French president once again expressed his condolences to Yulia Navalna over the death of her husband, Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny, describing it as “unjustifiable.”

Emmanuel Macron “honored the memory of Navalny and the courage with which he lived, fighting against corruption and defending freedom of speech” in Russia – the Elysée Palace announced in a statement. He said that during the meeting, Macron “reiterated France's support for all human rights defenders.”

Yulia Navalnaya she reported about the meeting with Macron on website X. “We talked about how France can support civil society in Russia and beyond in the fight against (Vladimir) Putin and his dictatorship,” she reported.

Navalnaya assured that Macron “understands that there are many people in Russia who are opposed to the war (with Ukraine) who need help and support.”

Death of the leader of the Russian opposition

Navalny, the leader of the anti-Kremlin opposition, who for many years publicized corruption among the Russian elites, died on February 16 this year in the “Polar Wolf” camp above the Arctic Circle.

He had previously survived a poisoning attempt, which he believed was carried out by the Russian special services. After the attack, he was treated in Germanyand when he returned to the country in 2021, he was arrested and sentenced to many years in prison.
