We have finished the security works at the Notre Dame Cathedral. The first restoration works at the cathedral will begin in winter, the Public Institution Responsible for Rebuilding the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris after the fire on April 15, 2019, announced on Saturday.
“Work to secure and consolidate the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, which began on April 16, 2019 (the day after the fire), has been successfully completed according to the agreed schedule,” the release said. “The cathedral is now completely safe” – underlined.
On Saturday, the Notre Dame Cathedral was opened to the general public for the first time since the fire, who can enter its area during the National Heritage Days and see the progress of the renovation team.
The security works consisted of dismantling the scaffolding that was in place during the fire, cleaning the damaged building, clearing debris from two chapels, installing wooden supports and securing the passage through the transept – it was explained.
The reopening of the cathedral for the first service after the reconstruction of the building is scheduled for April 16, 2024.
Over 830 million to rebuild the cathedral
French President Emmanuel Macron has promised that the cathedral will be rebuilt within five years. The institution coordinating the reconstruction is currently preparing to announce tenders for companies that renovate historic buildings.
In September, the stage of thorough cleaning of the cathedral’s internal walls and floors will begin, according to a press release.
340,000 for the reconstruction of the cathedral donors from 150 countries have contributed 833 million euros to date.
