One person was killed in a shootout in Nice in the south of France on Wednesday. The prosecutor informed the local media that the police shot a man suspected of having committed the murder during an attempted arrest.
A series of arrests were held in Nice on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old man on the night of December 24-25 in the Las Planas district. “One of the arrests went wrong. For reasons unknown at this stage, a police officer fired his gun at a suspect and apparently hit her in the neck. The person died 45 minutes later,” explained prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme, quoted by the AFP agency .
The victim is a person born in 1999. She died around 12.30. According to Bonhomme, there is no information available about her criminal record. As the prosecutor added, no weapons that could belong to the victim were found.
Police officer in custody
The police intervention took place in the center of Nice, about half a kilometer from the Promenade des Anglais. AFP said, citing a witness, that only one shot had been fired.
An officer serving with the search and intervention brigade of the Nice Judiciary Police was placed in custody on suspicion of “intentional homicide”.
The Nicene prosecutor said that several people related to the Christmas murder case had been arrested as part of a police operation.
As Reuters notes, the shooting took place at a time when issues related to violent crime, law and public order came to the fore before the presidential election in April 2022.
