France is struggling with floods and flooding. The downpours that hit the country over Easter caused many rivers to swell. In the Yonne department, some residents had to be evacuated and power outages were also reported.

On Wednesday, the most difficult situation was in the Yonne department in the north-east of the country – there the Meteo France meteorological agency issued the highest flood alerts. Orange flood warnings were in force in three neighboring departments.

Hot after the downpours

The highest level of warnings is in force on the Armancon River – on Monday, the water level in the river reached a record peak of 2.89 meters in the commune of Aisy-Sur-Armancon. Towns and farms along the river have been struggling with flooding for several days.

– There was 20-25 centimeters of water in the entire house, we'll see what it will be like tomorrow – one of the commune's residents, who had to leave his house, told the local media. – I expect that up to 1.5 meters of water will accumulate there and the house will be uninhabitable.

The floods forced the services to evacuate several families and caused power outages to almost 300 households. Yonne vineyard owners are also in a difficult situation – the Armancon flows through areas known for the production of Burgundy wines.

Forecasts indicate that the weather in France is expected to calm down after the stormy and rainy Easter period. The weekend will bring significant warming, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius in the south, while rain may only fall in the north.
