Second night in a row across France 45,000 policemen and gendarmes were mobilized, 7,000 of them in Paris alone. Additional troops were sent to, among others, Lyon, Grenoble and Marseille, where the most serious clashes took place on the night from Friday to Saturday.

Funeral of a shot teenager

On Saturday, the funeral of 17-year-old Nahel, who was shot by the police on Tuesday, took place in Nanterre near Paris. The death of a teenager during a roadside check sparked protests across the country, which turned into riots and fights with the police. From Tuesday night to Wednesday, cars and buildings were looted and set on fire across France. Saturday’s ceremony, which was attended by several thousand people, was peaceful.

Because of the riots, the president Emmanuel Macron postponed the start of his state visit to Germany from Sunday to Tuesday. Demonstration bans or curfews have been imposed in many French cities.
