In France, the tax office will test satellite imagery in nine departments in the coming days to track down fraudulent taxpayers, reported the French station BMF TV. The satellite image is to help, among others in detecting swimming pools or outbuildings that have not been reported to the tax office.
The French tax administration is to benefit, inter alia, from from Google data – TV reports. The software, using photos, is to automatically compare what is on them with what was included in the tax declaration. Information obtained in this way is to be sent to the office.
A proven way to deal with dishonest taxpayers
The mechanism with the use of satellite imagery has already proven itself in the department of Alpes-Maritimes in the south-east of the country. Within a few weeks, 3,000 private swimming pools that were not reported in the tax declaration were detected there.
The BMF TV announced that savings are one of the advantages of the new solution. Satellite imagery automates the process of detecting dishonest taxpayers.
Not everyone likes the proposed idea. Trade unions associating tax office employees accuse the solution of “dehumanizing” their profession, reported French television.
Similar solutions with the use of modern technology, e.g. drones, are already used in the service of tax offices, among others in Spain, Switzerland and Argentina.
