On Monday, the Council of Ministers adopted a bill providing for the extension of the circle of people who are entitled to free medicines to include children under 18 and seniors over 65, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced at a conference in Wołomin.

In the explanatory memorandum to the draft amendment to the Act on health care services financed from public funds and the Act on the reimbursement of medicines, foodstuffs for particular nutritional uses and medical devices, it was written that the above-mentioned groups of people are among those in which the need for medicines, foodstuffs for particular nutritional uses and medical devices is the largest.

Free medicines for children and seniors

It was indicated that in the case of people over 65, the demand for medicines, resulting from the natural aging process, is definitely higher than in other groups of beneficiaries. Moreover, since these people are generally of an age when they have already retired from work, medical expenses are a significant burden on their household budget.

The same applies to minors who are dependent on their actual guardians or statutory representatives, which also causes a high level of financial burden for these people.

Despite the fact that, unlike e.g. older people, the majority of carers of minors remain professionally active, the obligation imposed on them to incur the costs of medical treatment of their children can be extremely severe financially, because medicines or some foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional uses are necessities, which cannot be or at least should not be resigned due to possible financial barriers.

There will be a specific list

A specific list of medicines, foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional uses and medical devices will be announced by the Minister of Health in an announcement – separately for persons under 18 and separately for patients over 65 years of age.
