PARIS — French police and environmental activists fought violent pitched battles Saturday round a large agricultural irrigation reservoir in rural western France.

The inside minister reported greater than 30 individuals injured and stated police detonated greater than 4,000 non-lethal dispersion grenades as they fended off lots of of protesters, some armed with machetes, axes and gasoline bombs.
