The director of several episodes of “Friends” James Burrows revealed that one of the actresses in the cult production was not as funny as her colleagues from the set. Of working with her, she says it was “like clapping with one hand”.

James Burrows directed 15 episodes of Friends. In his autobiography entitled “Directed by James Burrows” revealed that the cast of the series included an actress who wasn’t as funny as the rest. It’s about Helen Baxendale, who played the role of Emily Waltham, a native of England partner and wife of Ross Geller (played by David Schwimmer) in the 4th and 5th seasons of production.

“Friends” director: She was nice, but not particularly funny

Baxendale appeared in a total of 14 episodes of Friends. One of the most famous scenes with her participation is the one in which Ross on the series says Rachel’s (Jennifer Aniston) name instead of Emily’s name at the wedding ceremony. This mishap ultimately ruined the couple’s relationship. It turns out that, according to Burrows, the presence of the actress herself in the series was also a kind of mismatch.

“She was nice, but she wasn’t particularly funny,” the director wrote in his book. He admitted that the team on the show had a hard time working with Baxendale because it didn’t have the same energy as the rest. “(David) Schwimmer had no one to bounce off of, it was like clapping with one hand,” he stated.

According to him, “in series and romantic comedies, humor is as important as chemistry.” “We realized that any new Ross girlfriend must be as funny as Rachel. You need someone who can laugh,” he emphasized. In similar situations, when an actor fails, he is replaced by another. The director explained that this was not possible with Baxendale due to lack of time. “Often there is no time for cast changes due to tight shooting deadlines or other logistical considerations,” he noted.

Baxendale herself referred to working on the series a few years ago. She said at the time that the entire cast was “nice and professional”, but she had never been close friends with them. “They’ve been doing it for years, and I was one of the many guests. I am proud and happy to have appeared in an extremely successful international production – she emphasized.

Friends is available on HBO MAX.
