There will no longer be an age limit of 35 years, all you need is a referral from your pregnancy doctor – from June 5, prenatal tests will be available to all women. And most importantly, free of charge. There are many such tests and they are not only intended to terminate the pregnancy in the event of a severe fetal defect.

My mother saw Igor before he was born. – I wanted to check if everything is OK with the child – says Natalia Holewa, the boy's mother. She paid nearly a thousand zlotys for prenatal tests out of her own pocket. – For such a young person, these are high costs – admits Natalia Holewa.

The state will pay for the tests for the second child, with whom Mrs. Natalia is now pregnant. From June 5, prenatal tests will be available free of charge on the National Health Fund for every pregnant woman.

So far, only some women were eligible for reimbursement

– The patient simply deserves it – comments Dr. Maciej Socha, head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of St. Hospital. Wojciech in Gdańsk.

So far, it has not been possible, even though doctors have been repeating for years that the only indication for prenatal tests is pregnancy. – Parents have the right to know whether the child will be healthy or whether there is a problem – says Dr. Agnieszka Żalińska from the Multifetal Pregnancy Clinic of the Polish Mother's Health Center Institute.

Reimbursement was only available to women suffering from diseases or those over 35 years of age, although doctors' practice shows that age does not always matter.

Once you know what to expect, you can prepare for it

– The patients I had had the most genetic defects that were detected, they were young patients, in their twenties. 24, 26, 28 years – says Wojciech Falęcki, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology from the Department of Obstetrics and Perinatology of the State Medical Institute of the Ministry of Interior and Administration.

Prenatal tests assess the risk of fetal diseases – from lethal disease syndromes to defects that can be repaired before or immediately after birth. Once you know what to expect, you can prepare for it.

– The patient can give birth in the right place, at the right time and in the right way. We then avoid the coincidence that a seriously ill child requiring urgent intervention is born in a center that is not prepared for it at all – explains Professor Mirosław Wielgoś, head of the Department of Obstetrics and Perinatology of the State Medical Institute of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, national consultant in the field of perinatology.

Everyone has been prepared for Mrs. Jowita's baby since the problem was discovered during the ultrasound. – Thanks to this, I was able to start treatment that actually saved the child's life – says Jowita Solnica.

Although the baby is still in the womb, doctors have already transfused it several times. – The condition was really serious – admits Jowita Solnica.

With good results, it is easier to prepare for childbirth

However, prenatal tests usually bring positive news. – In over 95 percent of cases, we can tell our pregnant women and patients that everything is fine – informs Prof. Mirosław Wielgoś.

The tests that the National Health Fund will reimburse include first trimester ultrasound with the PAPP-A test and second trimester ultrasound with assessment of fetal anatomy. With good results, it is easier to prepare for childbirth.
