Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State Assets Jacek Sasin argues that the minimum wage can buy twice as much petrol as in 2015. We checked whether this is indeed the case.

Law and Justice continues meetings with voters attended by the party’s most important politicians. On Sunday, March 19, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State Assets Jacek Sasin met with the inhabitants of Wysokie Mazowieckie in the Podlaskie Voivodship. At the beginning of the meeting, he mentioned the favorable prices of petrol in Poland compared to prices in other European Union countries. “Let’s relate it to earnings,” he suggested.

Today, the minimum wage can buy almost twice as many liters of gasoline than it was in 2015.

We compared the words of Jacek Sasin with the data on the minimum wage and the data on EU95 petrol prices provided by the Polish Organization of Petroleum Industry and Trade (POPiHN). Sasin gave a grossly inflated estimate.

The minimum wage can buy more fuel now, but only a third more

In 2015, the minimum gross salary was PLN 1,750. According to the website salary calculator Remuneration.pl it was PLN 1,374.16 net. According to POPiHN data, throughout 2015 EU95 petrol in retail trade cost PLN 4.61 per liter on average. In 2015, the minimum net salary could be bought 298.1 liters of fuel.

Currently, the minimum gross salary is PLN 3,490. According to the converter of the website Wynagrodzenia.pl, it is PLN 2,709.48 net. According to the latest POPiHN data from 2023 – January and February data – gasoline cost PLN 6.64 on average. Currently, you can buy for the minimum net salary 408.1 liters of fuel.

In the light of this data, the claim that today the minimum wage can buy “almost twice as many liters of gasoline as it was in 2015” is false. You can now buy just over a third more fuel – 36.9 percent to be exact. more.
