Cold Moon – where does the name come from?
The December full moon is called the Cold Moon, referring to the increasingly cold days. It comes from the traditions of the indigenous people of North America. The Celts called the December full moon the Oak Moon, honoring the religious rituals carried out in December. The Anglo-Saxon peoples called it the Long Night Moon.
13th full moon
The full moon is one of the four phases of the moon. It occurs when the Silver Globe is in opposition to the Sun, i.e. on the opposite side of the Earth from our star. During a full moon, the entire disk of the Moon is visible, fully illuminated by sunlight. This phenomenon occurs on average every 29.5 days.
As Adam Hurcewicz from the fanpage “About space and astronautics – Adam Hurcewicz” recalled, there will be 13 full moons in 2023. This “extra”, Blue Moon, lit up the sky on August 31. The name of the “Blue Moon” is the second full moon in a given month or the third of four full moons in an astronomical season – usually there are three full moons for each season.
