The Nintendo Switch game console overtook the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Game Boy to become the third best-selling console in history, according to the Forbes magazine portal.

According to Forbes, 122.55 million Nintendo Switch units have been sold so far. With the last few million units from the fourth quarter of 2022, the console jumped on the list of all-time PS4 (117.2 million) and Game Boy (118.69 million). Nintendo Switch is now the third best-selling gaming console in history.

Nintendo Switch – the third best-selling game console

Forbes explains that the only two other consoles achieved a better result – Nintendo DS (154.02 million units sold) and PS2 (155 million). The latest console from Sony – PlayStation5 – has sold approx. 32 million copies so far. In turn, the best-selling Microsoft console remains the XBOX 360 (84 million units).

Is it possible for the Nintendo Switch to climb to the top? “Regardless of how impressive the Switch’s result seems, it’s hard to believe that more than 30 million copies will be sold. Especially if Nintendo actually stops production of the new model of this console. Although anything is still possible” – states “Forbes”.

The most popular games on Nintendo Switch

The magazine also lists the top 10 games on Nintendo Switch:

1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 52 million units; 2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 41.59 million; 3. Super Smash Bros. ultimate – 30.44 million; 4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 29 million; 5. Pokemon Sword and Shield – 25.68 million; 6. Super Mario Odyssey – 25.12 million; 7. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet – 20.61 million; 8. Super Mario Party – 18.79 million; 9. Ring Fit Adventure – 15.22 million; 10. Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! – 15.07 million.

According to Forbes, it’s “pretty crazy that Mario Kart 8, a game that was released in 2014, before the Switch even came out, is the best-selling game.”

“This should be another big year for the Switch, considering The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be released on May 12 if there are no delays. It looks like it will sell at least as well in the long run as Breath of the Wild, if not better,” predicts the magazine.

He adds that “as far as the next generation of Nintendo consoles is concerned, the only thing you can rely on right now are rumors that Nintendo has canceled the planned update and opted for an OLED model instead, and is simply planning to make a completely new unit.”

“The fact that it hasn’t been publicly discussed at all probably points to late 2024 or 2025 at the earliest,” Forbes explains.
