– Damian was the best of all of us. We met right at the beginning, in the first days of the war (in Ukraine – ed.), on the border in Medyka. We started helping people who were fleeing the war. We helped there for seven months, so we were able to get to know each other very well. Then a short break and the earthquake in Turkey last February. We, as the Wolne Mieszka foundation, set off immediately into the unknown, but when we reached the town of Elbistan, very far in the east of Turkey, Damian was already there before us. He organized the kitchen and prepared to cook for thousands of people. Thanks to him, we were able to obtain products in this ruined part of the country – recalled Mikołaj Rykowski.

“He was a man for whom nothing was impossible”

– He was a man for whom nothing was impossible. A call to Damian, our friend, solved every problem. He always came with a sincere smile, always with sympathy and empathy. He took care of something and smiled, patted us on the back, and went on to help. That's what Damian was like, Rykowski said.

Then Rykowski turned directly to the deceased volunteer. – I will say on behalf of all of us, all our volunteers, Damian's co-workers, from World Central Kitchen, from the Wolne Głos foundation, from Przemyśl – Damian, we are terribly, terribly sorry. This news was incredibly unbelievable for us, but when we found out that one of the Poles had died, we found out that you were the only one there, he added.

PAH spokeswoman: a safety guarantee was provided for this journey

Helena Krajewska, the spokeswoman of the Polish Humanitarian Action explained that representatives of both sides of the conflict were informed about the humanitarian transport. – Such trips do not take place in a vacuum, no transport in a foreign country takes place in a vacuum. This must be agreed to by local authorities or forces controlling a given territory. Safety guarantees are also provided for this journey, she said.

She added that, as a rule, humanitarian convoy cars are marked, unless this cannot be done “for security reasons.” Humanitarian workers should also be marked appropriately.

Krajewska noted that this attack could have “tragic” consequences for the civilian population, because the supply of over 200 tons of food was suspended. – It's not just about the deaths of seven people. The point is what consequences this will have for people who have been waiting for this food. World Central Kitchen and at least two other organizations have suspended their activities (in the Gaza Strip – ed.) and will have to make a risk assessment whether work can continue there, she said.
