The police detained another six hooligans in connection with the participation in a fight and damage to property, which took place in July at the stadium during the match between Lechia Gdańsk and Akademia Pandev. Earlier, the charges were heard by three other men.
The arrests took place on Sunday morning. The officers entered several apartments at the same time in the Pomorskie and Kujawsko-Pomorskie provinces. – During the operations, they detained six men aged 20 to 39. Police counter-terrorists took part in the arrest of one of them, because the policemen had information that the man could be dangerous – said the chief inspector. Magdalena Ciska, press officer of the Municipal Police Headquarters in Gdańsk.
She added that on Sunday the suspects were charged with damaging the equipment of the pub located in the stadium and causing losses of no less than PLN 100,000.
– The next charges concerned the crime of beating up with a dangerous tool and causing bodily injuries as well as disrupting the course of a mass event and causing people staying there to escape and stopping the match by the referee – explained Ciska.
As she added, the offenses were hooligan in nature, which will have an impact on the possibility of increasing the penalty.
The policemen applied to the prosecutor’s office to remand the suspects in pre-trial detention. Decisions are to be made on Monday. The officers announce that this is not the end of the detentions and emphasize that the case is of a developmental nature.
Riots and an interrupted match
The riots occurred on July 7, 2022 during the match The 1st round of the football qualifying round of the Conference League between Lechia Gdańsk and the Macedonian Pandev Academy. The referee decided to send the players back to the dressing room when there were clashes between the hooligans on the stand occupied by the hosts’ supporters. The brawl took place even before the match in the Przystadionowy club, and then the brawl began in the stands of the Gdańsk stadium. The break in the match between Lechia Gdańsk and Akademia Pandev lasted about 40 minutes. The meeting ended with the score 4: 1 for Lechia.
The day after this incident, policemen detained four other men. In three of them, the prosecutor’s office, at the request of the police, brought charges against them damage to property, battery with the use of a dangerous tool and breach of the provisions of the act on the safety of mass events. The court placed them under pre-trial detention.
He may be imprisoned for up to eight years for participating in a beating with a dangerous tool. The offense of damage to property is punishable by imprisonment of up to five years. The crime of disrupting a mass event is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment.
