Four years ago, during the 27th Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, was attacked. Doctors fought for the life of the local government for many hours. His death was announced the next day. – Hear this scream, hear this call of Paul. Who among you will be brave enough to end the hatred? – asked Magdalena Adamowicz at the ceremony at the memorial plaque.

On January 13, 2019, the 27th Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity took place at Targ Węglowy in Gdańsk. The mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, appeared on the stage at that time. – Gdańsk is generous, Gdańsk shares its good, Gdańsk wants to be a city of solidarity. For all this, I would like to thank you very much, because you threw money in the streets and squares of Gdańsk, you were volunteers. This is a wonderful time of sharing goodness. You are loved, Gdańsk is the most wonderful city in the world. Thank you! he said.

After the countdown to the traditional Light to Heaven, he ran onto the stage Stefan W. and struck Adamowicz three blows with a knife. Despite many hours of doctors’ fight, Paweł Adamowicz’s life could not be saved.

Magdalena Adamowicz: who among you understood that the word kills?

In the place where the brutal attack on the president took place four years ago, in front of the memorial plaque built on the first anniversary of the attack, the president of Gdańsk paid tribute to Adamowicz Aleksandra Dulkiewicz and the relatives of the deceased: the widow Magdalena Adamowicz and brother Piotr Adamowicz. Representatives of the Self-Government Movement TAK! For Poland and the head of the Civic Platform Donald Tusk.

The first to speak was Adamowicz’s widow, Magdalena Adamowicz. – I am grateful every day for the people who stand next to me. For human solidarity and tenderness. Thank you and my daughters, Antonina and Terasa, because the community, and especially the community of Gdańsk residents, which Paweł has been building over the years, is an invaluable value, it is a strength that helps in suffering – she admitted.

– Some of you ask: can I forgive? Others want to know: Does time heal all wounds? Will I look a murderer in the eye? Will my daughters live normally? Has Paul’s death taught us anything? Who do I think is to blame? she exchanged. – These questions are asked by those who for four years tried not to do anything to make the truth come out and the crime to be solved. Today I will direct my questions to them: Which of you has taken a step backwards in your fierce hatred? Who of you apologized for the hate and sowing contempt? Who among you understood that the word kills?

Adamowicz specified that she was speaking to “all those who wield power through hatred.” She stated that her husband “was murdered because he was very brave”. – Before the murderer’s knife stabbed him, your words, filtered every day, contemptuous, hateful propaganda killed him – she exchanged.

– Hear this scream, hear this call of Paul. Who among you will be brave enough to end the hatred? Who among you will pull out the teeth of hatred from the walls? Who among you will bury the hate of the world? Who will feel the strength and time, who will walk the city streets to protect us from contempt? she asked. I don’t want your words anymore, I want your actions. Stop hating, stop killing, she concluded.

Piotr Adamowicz: the machinery of hateful propaganda works

Piotr Adamowicz thanked the gathered for their presence. He mentioned that journalists ask many questions, although one of them – as he said – always repeats: did this death, this murder, change anything in public life.

– I answer that perhaps in the lives of individuals, it certainly is. But in public life absolutely not. In public life, we are dealing with blunt, brutal propaganda, with blunt, rude information strips – he reminded. “This machine of hateful propaganda works,” he added.

He reported that the last trial of the murderer of Paweł Adamowicz will most likely take place on March 9. – In my opinion, there will be a second instance, so it will take some time – he admitted.

Tusk: we will come here on the fifth anniversary and say that we have accomplished the task

Donald Tusk then took the floor. – We promised Paweł that we would do everything in our power to make hatred and contempt disappear from Polish public life and that evil would never triumph again, especially in such a brutal way as in this place four years ago. I want to repeat these words, dear Paul. We will come on the fifth anniversary here, to this place, and we will tell you that we have done our job to the best of our ability. That we will free our city and our homeland, but also our thoughts and emotions, from evil, from hatred, from contempt, just as you always wanted – he said.

– We will remember you, and as long as we remember you, we will know that good must triumph over evil and that this is our most important task. See you next year, Paul.

Dulkiewicz: Gdańsk is changing

Aleksandra Dulkiewicz admitted that “today we probably did not succeed in everything”. – But I want to tell you, Paweł, that the Gdańsk of your dreams is getting closer. There is still a lot ahead of us, we have a lot to do, but Gdańsk is changing. It changes because we know how to work together. The second thing you dreamed of is community. Today, many people ask if this death changed anything. I know one thing. It has certainly changed us, inhabitants of Gdańsk. We can act as a community, she assessed.

– I hope you’re smiling at us today, despite the rain. We are trying to pass this exam, but there is still a lot ahead of us. We will come here every year and report on how our city and our community are doing, she assured.
