The attacker attacked on stage

The perpetrator of the attack on the mayor of Gdańsk turned out to be 27-year-old Stefan W., who had left prison a month before the attack on Adamowicz, where he had been serving a 5.5-year sentence for robbery with a dangerous tool. The man entered four bank branches. The amounts stolen by him were not high: from 2.5 thousand. up to 6.8 thousand zloty. The money the man spent, as he said, “on taxis, food and a casino.” After the arrest of Stefan W., the prosecutor’s office charged him, and the court imposed a temporary arrest on him. In December 2021, after an investigation lasting almost three years, The prosecutor’s office filed an indictment against Stefan W.

At that time, the Gdańsk investigators reported that in the course of the investigation over 400 witnesses were interviewed, including co-inmates and staff of the prisons where the accused was serving a prison sentence, and members of his family, among others, on the fact that he planned to commit the act and his motivation. – Stefan W. was accused of murdering Paweł Adamowicz with a direct intention for a motivation that deserves special condemnation and forcing another person to behave in a certain way by threat – Grażyna Wawryniuk, spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk, said in 2021.

He pleads not guilty. The process continues

According to the prosecutor’s office, the defendant committed both crimes under the conditions of re-offending, before the expiry of five years from serving a sentence of imprisonment imposed by a final judgment for the crime of robbery with the use of a dangerous weapon. Interrogated several times during the investigation, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. In the course of the investigation, Stefan W. was subjected to forensic and psychiatric examinations, including those combined with forensic and psychiatric observations. In the case, three opinions were obtained regarding the sanity of Stefan W. In the third – conclusive – experts stated that at the time of committing the alleged crimes he was of limited sanity. After the investigation, the prosecutor’s office announced that the motive for the murder of President Paweł Adamowicz was presented by the accused Stefan W. in a statement made by him immediately after the attack. – The collected evidence does not allow for any other motivation than the one adopted in the initial phase of the investigation. It was a desire to take revenge because of an unjust and too high, according to the defendant, sentence for robberies with the use of a dangerous weapon. The defendant identified the person of the mayor of Gdańsk in general with people who exercised all power, including the judiciary, at the time when he was sentenced – explained prosecutor Wawryniuk after the indictment.

The trial against the killer of Paweł Adamowicz started on March 28, 2022. Since then, over 20 hearings have been held, during which dozens of witnesses were questioned. Hearings were conducted, almost always, in the largest hall of the District Court in Gdańsk. Each time Stefan W. was led into a glass cage, which was installed in this room due to previously conducted cases of organized crime groups. Stefan W. is facing 12 years in prison to life imprisonment. Expert opinions may affect the amount of the fine. The court may apply extraordinary mitigation.
