An unusual incident took place in the chapel at the airport in Gdansk. Employees of the Airport Security Service detained a man who was supposed to tear pages from the Bible and damage, among others, a wooden altar and a papal chair. The losses were estimated at PLN 35,000. A 27-year-old Belarusian citizen suspected of causing the damage was taken into police custody.

On Wednesday morning (February 15), police officers from the Osowa police station were summoned to the airport in Gdańsk Rębiechowo. Employees of the Airport Security Service arrested a man there, suspected of destroying the chapel located in the terminal. A sobriety test showed that he was under the influence of almost 1.5 per mille of alcohol.

– Police determined that the 27-year-old citizen Belarus entered the chapel and began knocking over and throwing the chapel furnishings, then ripped the pages from the Bible. As a result of its action, among others, the papal armchair and a roll-up with the image were damaged John Paul II, a wooden altar, a leaflet stand and a wooden floor. The man was placed in police custody. When he sobered up, he was charged with insulting religious feelings and damaging and insulting objects of religious worship. For these crimes, the Code provides for a penalty of up to 5 years in prison.
