Two young kestrels stuck in a vertical pipe. Their squeaking and scratching alarmed passers-by. He himself was unable to help them, so the city guards took care of the birds.
On Tuesday, April 4, shortly after 1 p.m., to the number city guard A man called and reported that strange noises could be heard from the gutter located next to the entrance to the Gdańsk Museum in the building of the Main Town Hall. He suggested that an animal had probably fallen into it.
– As we approached the building, we heard a bird wailing from the gutter. The only way to look into it was to open the inspection window. Unfortunately, without the right tools, it was impossible – recalls Insp. Monika Krupińska, Gdańsk city guard.
With the help of a museum employee, the guards opened the cleaner.
– Two young kestrels stuck inside. They were bruised and weakened – explains Insp. Krupińska.
The officers placed the rescued predators in a transporter and took them to the animal hospital at Kartuska Street for observation. Finally, they were taken care of by the Pomeranian Rehabilitation Center for Wild Birds and Small Mammals “Ostoja” in Pomieczyn.
Stress killed the kestrel
According to an employee of the center, one of the kestrels died on Wednesday. She did not survive the stress of being in the gutter and the rescue operation. It is also difficult to determine how long the animals stayed inside it. It is known, however, that they were a couple. As the worker suspects, they were most likely looking for a nesting place in the gutter.
For the second bird, the prognosis is good. The kestrel feeds on its own and receives strengthening drips. Perhaps she will be able to return to freedom soon.
