21- and 22-year-olds who beat up a homeless man with a disability in Gdańsk (Pomeranian Voivodeship) were charged and temporarily arrested. Such a decision was made on Monday, at the request of the prosecutor’s office, the District Court in Gdańsk. A 16-year-old girl who recorded the incident with a mobile phone was sent to a youth care center.
On Monday, the District Court in Gdańsk agreed with the request of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk and decided to place two men aged 21 and 22 in pre-trial detention for three months.
“Activities in the prosecutor’s office with the participation of men were carried out on Sunday. Both confessed to beating. On Monday, an arrest meeting was held in the District Court in Gdańsk,” the spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk, prosecutor Grażyna Wawryniuk, told PAP.

She added that the men heard charges of beating the victim jointly and in agreement with a minor. “As a result of the beating, the victim suffered contusions of the head, face and chest, which resulted in a violation of the functioning of the body’s organs for more than 7 days” – she explained.
She pointed out that the prosecutor considered that the perpetrators of the act committed publicly and without reason, thus showing a gross disregard for the legal order. In addition, the prosecutor accused one of the men of forcing the victim to behave in a certain way.

After the recording was published, the video was secured by police officers who established the identity of the perpetrators and their whereabouts. On Friday evening, criminals detained a 16-year-old Gdańsk girl and a 21-year-old from Pruszcz Gdański and a 22-year-old from Gdańsk for this case.

A 16-year-old girl who recorded the beating was taken to the police emergency room for children. While checking her data, it turned out that she was wanted by the family and juvenile court, which issued a decision to place her in a youth care centre.
The men face up to three years in prison for their involvement in the beating. If the beating results in serious bodily harm, the perpetrator is liable to imprisonment for up to eight years. The crimes the men are accused of are hooligan in nature, which means that the punishment they face will be more severe.
