The trial of the murder of Paweł Adamowicz is coming to an end. Closing speeches are to be delivered on Monday before the District Court in Gdańsk. Stefan W., who attacked a local government official on the stage of the 27th Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, is accused of murdering the mayor of Gdańsk.

On Monday, the District Court in Gdańsk will hold the 25th hearing in the case of the murder of the mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz. For that day, the presiding judge, Judge Aleksandra Kaczmarek, appointed the closing of the trial and closing speeches. They will be delivered by the defender of the accused of murdering Stefan W., the prosecutor and the attorneys of auxiliary prosecutors.

After hearing the final votes, the court will immediately proceed to the deliberation and then issue a verdict. It may do so on the same day, or – as indicated in the Code of Criminal Procedure – when the case is complex or, for other important reasons, it may postpone the issuance of the sentence for a period not exceeding 14 days. The Code of Criminal Procedure also indicates that if this time limit is exceeded, the hearing shall be conducted from the beginning.

Stefan W. attacked the mayor of Gdańsk on stage

On January 13, 2019, the 27th Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity took place at Targ Węglowy in Gdańsk. As every year, the mayor of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, appeared on the stage.

– Gdańsk is generous, Gdańsk shares its good, Gdańsk wants to be a city of solidarity. For all this, I would like to thank you very much, because you threw money in the streets and squares of Gdańsk, you were volunteers. This is a wonderful time of sharing goodness. You are loved, Gdańsk is the most wonderful city in the world. Thank you! – said the local government official just before Light to Heaven.

When the countdown is over and the sparklers are lit, do Stefan W. ran up to the president and stabbed him three times with a knife. The next day – January 14, 2019 – Paweł Adamowicz died in the hospital.

Stefan W. is accused of committing murder with direct intent as a result of a motivation that deserves special condemnation, as well as of committing the crime of forcing another person to behave in a certain way. Both crimes were allegedly committed by the accused under conditions of recidivism. The accused faces from 12 years to life imprisonment.

Experts on the sanity of Stefan W.

In mid-December last year, during two hearings, psychiatrists and psychologists were interrogated, who gave their opinion on the sanity of Stefan W. During the expert hearings, the hearing was closed to the public.

According to the first opinion of experts from Kraków, which was prepared in 2019, Stefan W. was insane at the time of the attack on Paweł Adamowicz. Other expert opinions of psychiatrists from Warsaw, Starogard Gdański and Łódź issued in 2020 and 2021 indicated that Stefan W. had limited sanity at the time of the murder. This can affect the amount of your prison sentence. The court may apply extraordinary mitigation.

At the beginning of February this year, it was reported that the defender of W. filed request for a fourth one, the psychiatric opinion of the accused. On February 21, the court dismissed the request. And that means that there will be no second opinion.

Persons responsible for protecting the final of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity sentenced

At the end of February, the District Court in Gdańsk sentenced Gracjan Z. and Dariusz S., the owner of the agency and the head of security, respectively to six and five months in prison suspended for two years on the organization of the final of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, during which Paweł Adamowicz was murdered. Representatives of the Regional Volunteer Center in Gdańsk, a city official and two policemen were acquitted of the charges.
