The 24-year-old mother of a newborn whose body was discovered in a garbage bin in Gdynia after the woman went to hospital was charged with murdering a child and insulting a corpse. According to the autopsy, the most likely cause of the child's death was suffocation. The court will decide the fate of the suspect today.

Let us recall that on Saturday afternoon, a 24-year-old woman was admitted to hospital in Gdynia with severe pain. Her injuries indicated that she had given birth to a child. Radio Gdańsk was the first to report the matter.

– The woman showed the officers the garbage bin in which the body of the newborn was found – said Grażyna Wawryniuk, spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk, on Monday.

The prosecutor decided to transport the child's body for an autopsy. Three people were detained in connection with the death of the newborn: a 24-year-old woman and two members of her family.

– The woman was charged with two charges: murder of a child and insulting a corpse – said today the spokeswoman of the District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk, prosecutor Grażyna Wawryniuk.

The remaining people were questioned as witnesses and released. As prosecutor Wawryniuk added, “the evidence collected at this stage did not show that they participated in this event.”

The woman claims that she gave birth to a stillborn child

She also explained that on Monday, after the autopsy, the expert prepared a preliminary opinion, which showed that the child was born in the ninth month of pregnancy.

– The male infant was born alive and had a short lifespan. The most likely cause of death was suffocation, the prosecutor said.

The 24-year-old pleaded not guilty. When giving an explanation, she said that in her opinion the baby was stillborn.

– However, she admitted to insulting the bodies, i.e. abandoning them in a garbage shelter – added Wawryniuk. The court will decide on the suspect's fate on Tuesday.
