The body of a newborn was found on the balcony of an apartment in Gdynia on Friday. The child’s mother and her partner were charged with insulting a corpse. There are preliminary autopsy results, but it is still unknown whether the baby was born alive. We will have to wait a few more weeks for the expert’s final opinion. It depends on her whether there will be further charges in this case.
Prosecutor Mariusz Duszyński from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk on Saturday confirmed that the body of the newborn was found on Friday afternoon on the balcony of one of the Gdynia apartments. Activities were carried out at the premises with the participation of a forensic medicine expert.

Two Ukrainian citizens were detained in the case: the child’s 44-year-old mother and her partner, who is a year younger.
On Sunday, according to the prosecutor, the couple was charged with the crime of insulting a corpse. They may be subject to a fine, restriction of liberty or imprisonment for up to two years.
Both the child’s mother and her partner pleaded not guilty, but provided explanations. The prosecutor’s office does not disclose their content.
After completing the activities, the prosecutor applied preventive measures to the suspects in the form of police supervision and a ban on leaving the country with confiscation of their passports. The proceedings are ongoing.
It is not known whether the baby was born alive
An autopsy was performed on Saturday to determine whether the baby was born alive and, if so, what the cause of death was.
According to prosecutor Duszyński, in the preliminary opinion the expert did not find any traumatic changes indicating violence against the newborn. The final opinion on the causes of the child’s death will most likely be issued in a few weeks.
Further actions in the case, including possible charges, will depend on the expert’s final opinion.
