The Ukrainian parliament approved the nomination of General Vasyl Maluk as head of the Security Service of Ukraine. So far, he was the acting head of the SBU. Maluk replaced Ivan Bakanov, who was dismissed last summer.

The result of the vote in the Verkhovna Rada was announced by MP Oleksiy Honcharenko. He reported that the parliament accepted the motion of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

General Vasyl Maluk, 39, comes from the city of Korostyshev in the Zhytomyr region. From 2001, he served in the state security authorities. He graduated from the National Security Service Academy Ukraine (SBU) – a university educating staff of Ukrainian secret services, he specialized in jurisprudence.

“Professional Servant”

“Unlike his predecessor Ivan Bakanov, Vasyl Maluk is a professional serviceman with combat experience,” the Ukrainian section of the BBC commented on Tuesday’s event. She recalled that Maluk fought in Donbass after the outbreak of the armed conflict with pro-Russian separatists in 2014. When the armed invasion began Russia to Ukraine in February last year, Maluk was the deputy head of the Interior Ministry Denys Monastyrski. In March, however, he returned to the SBU, where he was deputy to Ivan Bakanov.

Western and Ukrainian media, citing their own sources, reported that the SBU under the command of Maluk was involved in the operation to blow up the Crimean Bridge in October last year and the naval drone attack on a military base in annexed Sevastopol. Officially, the Ukrainian side did not confirm its participation in these attacks.
