George Winston, the esteemed American pianist and Grammy Award winner, is dead. He was 73 years old. He had been struggling with a serious illness for a long time.

As reported on the artist’s website www.georgewinston.com, Winston died in his sleep on Sunday, June 4 after a 10-year battle with cancer.

Winston combined elements of jazz, classical music and folk in his music. He recorded million-selling albums, including “Autumn”, “Winter into Spring” and “December”.

The artist played under the influence of various currents and directions, starting with the American jazz pianist Fats Waller and ending with the band The Doors. He has recorded over 12 solo piano albums as well as soundtracks for many television series.

Grammy winner

In 1995, he won a Grammy Award for the album “Forest”, which was recognized as the best in the category of New Age music. The next album, which is a kind of tribute to the music of The Doors, “Night Divides the Day”, was nominated in 2004 for the Grammy Award as the best in the field of contemporary instrumental music.

“I just played the best I could, inspired by the seasons, topography, regions and – sometimes – sociological elements,” Winston said in an interview.
