– Today I vetoed the “Russian” law. This law is Russian in essence and spirit and is contrary to our constitution and all European standards. It is an obstacle on our European path. This veto is legally valid and will be forwarded to Parliament today. This bill is not subject to any changes or improvements, so a veto is a very simple solution. This law must be repealed – the president said at a press conference Georgia Salome Zurabishvili.

The Georgian Foreign Agents Law provides that legal entities and media receiving over 20%. funds from abroad will be subject to mandatory registration and reporting and will be entered into a special register of agents of foreign influence. This means that the Georgian Ministry of Justice will be able to carry out inspections of such organizations under any pretext.

The bill was adopted on Tuesday in the third reading by the parliament – the document is almost a copy of Russian solutions criticized internationally.

Americans react to the adoption of the bill in Georgia

The Georgian opposition raised the alarm that the bill also runs counter to the country's desire to European Union. Parliament reacted to Tuesday's move Washington supporting the Western aspiration of Georgian society. The new legislation has brought hundreds of thousands of Georgians onto the streets of Tbilisi in recent weeks.

During a press conference in Tbilisi, the US assistant secretary of state said that United States are ready impose sanctions on Georgian officials in connection with the adoption of the Act. Aid in the amount may also be withheld $390 million. Half of this amount would be allocated for military purposes, and the rest for economic development projects, including the building of democratic institutions and civil society.

European leaders say Georgian law is contrary to European values. In turn, the leaders of the ruling party claim that it only serves to ensure transparency of financing of the foreign non-governmental sector and media.
