Georgia. The Sejm of the Republic of Poland appeals in a resolution to allow Mikheil Saakszvili to “undertake the necessary specialist treatment”

The Sejm calls on the Georgian authorities to immediately allow former Georgian President Mikheil Saakshvili to receive the necessary treatment and appeals to the international community to save his life and health, a resolution of the Polish Sejm adopted on Friday reads. The medical team of Saakashvili, who is serving a sentence for abuse of power, says his condition has deteriorated significantly.

The draft of this resolution was presented by the Presidium of the Sejm and read out at the Friday session of the chamber by the deputy marshal from PIS Małgorzata Gosiewska. Speaker of the meeting Elizabeth Witek said that there had been objections to the proposal to adopt the resolution by acclamation and therefore ordered a vote.

There were 438 deputies in favor of the resolution, 8 against, and 1 person abstained from voting. According to the information on the Sejm’s website, eight Confederation politicians were against, and the chairman of the Confederation branch abstained from voting Krzysztof Bosak.

Appeal “to the international community to save life and health” of Saakashvili

In the resolution on the state of health of the former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili it was written that “in connection with disturbing information about the dramatic situation in which the former president is GeorgiaThe Sejm of the Republic of Poland calls on the Georgian authorities to immediately enable Mikheil Saakshvili to receive the necessary specialist treatment, and appeals to the international community to save the life and health of the former Georgian president.

The deputies stressed that there was information “about the dramatic situation of the former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili, including medical diagnoses showing the rapidly deteriorating condition of his health.”

The resolution pointed out that the doctor’s recommendation for immediate specialist treatment, which is not possible in Georgia due to the lack of appropriate medical facilities.

The politicians drew attention to Mikheil Saakashvili’s “significant contribution to shaping the pro-European attitudes of Georgians, which resulted in the Georgian authorities submitting an application for membership of the European Union in 2022”. They also wrote in the resolution that Saakashvili declares that after undergoing treatment, rehabilitation and recovery, “he is ready to return to the country and submit to further judgment, confirming the will to continue consistent cooperation and activities for the development of Georgia and its rapprochement with Euro-Atlantic structures.”

Sejm of the Republic of Poland Calls on the Georgian authorities to be guided by the universal principles of humanitarianism, according to which human life and health are of the highest value, and calls for Mikheil Saakshvili to be immediately given the necessary specialist treatment that meets global standards, in accordance with the recommendations of doctors, and calls on the international community, friends of Georgia, to solidarity and persistent actions to save Mikheil Saakashvili’s life and health.

Saakashvili was detained in autumn 2021, after returning from Ukraine. During his stay in Ukraine, he held government functions and obtained citizenship of this country. The former Georgian president was convicted in his country of abuse of power and is serving a six-year sentence. According to his supporters, the punishment is politically motivated. He is currently in a hospital in Tbilisi, where he was transferred from prison in May. Saakashvili’s medical team says his health has deteriorated significantly, and lawyers have applied for a suspension of his sentence and urgent medical care abroad.
